In the past few weeks things have started to get back to normal. As Budapest is slowly being opened from the virus lockdown, more and more people are out using buses, trains, trolleys and trams. Accordingly, we\u2019ve selected a humorous conversation between two Hungarians from Pesti Paprika<\/em> Cabaret series entitled The tram terminates here.<\/em><\/p>\n

Pesti paprika on radio<\/h2>\n

In 1958 the Hungarian Radio broadcast a three-part cabaret series under the name Pesti paprika<\/a>. The cabaret scenes are sassy, witty and funny and they give a whole new meaning to the terms \u201cpaprika\u201d and \u201cspice\u201d.  According to the cabaret host, Pesti paprika is a lot older than Szegedi paprika, it is as old as Buda and Pest. It is rooted in asphalt.  It grows in apartment houses<\/a> and offices<\/a>. On concrete floors of factories and in smoke-filled coffee houses. Pesti paprika is the toughest plant in the world. It flourishes in heat and frost. No fire, flood, earthquake or war can do any harm in it. It is like a jungle plant: it grows speedily and it spreads everywhere. Pesti paprika is very similar to Szegedi paprika as both are spicy and hot. They only differ in the way people use them. Paprika from Szeged is food-seasoning, whereas Paprika from Pest seasons LIFE itself. Pesti Paprika is humour and spirit. Pesti Paprika Cabaret stories are brought to you by PaprikaMoln\u00e1r\u2019s Paprika Museum.<\/p>\n

This particular cabaret scene we\u2019ve selected reveals the strange inverted political criticism wrapped in humour that Hungarians are so good at. This requires the skill to read between lines. In English I\u2019m adding a little explanation before the piece.<\/p>\n

The tram terminates here<\/h2>\n

In this cabaret scene two Hungarian men, Mr Cukor and Mr Pasternak, who happen to be acquaintances, meet on a city tram and they share their feelings. The conversation is slowly flowing between them with small talk about how awful they feel about life, money and politics. This is 1958 and what you say is strictly monitored and you have to be careful not go overboard with criticism. However, a little irony and absurdity is allowed and the best way to express criticism is through humour. This way you have the illusion you can say what you want after all\u2026<\/p>\n

In The tram terminates here<\/em> we\u2019re led to believe until the last moment that the conversation on politics is taking place on Budapest tram and we feel a little uncomfortable about it, until\u2026<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

MR CUKOR (enters):<\/em> Oh, good day, Mr Forg\u00e1cs! What a place to meet?!<\/p>\n

MR PASTERNAK (sitting):<\/em> Yes, the city tram\u2026 Come sit down next to me\u2026 How are you?<\/p>\n

MR CUKOR: Well, if you ask my opinion\u2026 I daresay both of us are pretty stupid we stayed here. With such leaders! You know, Mr Pasternak, these days I don\u2019t even like to read the new newspapers. Every day there\u2019s a new regulation\u2026<\/p>\n

MR PASTERNAK: Yes, and it\u2019s getting worse! The government keeps on promising things, but nothing\u2019s happening. Look at housing! Tthey promised they\u2019ll sort out the housing issue.<\/p>\n

MR CUKOR: Yeah, I don\u2019t believe these guys. I don\u2019t trust them. They keep saying how hard things are but are they doing anything? No! Because they don\u2019t have money or housing problems! What a shame! These guys are villains!<\/p>\n

MR PASTERNAK: (leaning close): S<\/em>ssh! Quiet! There are spies everywhere.<\/p>\n

MR CUKOR: I don\u2019t really care anymore. I\u2019m only saying the truth\u2026 At first they said everything\u2019s gonna be all right\u2026 And, what? You look around and all you see is unemployment and homeless people. These days if you get a job, you don\u2019t earn enough to make a living.<\/p>\n

MR PASTERNAK: Well, Mr Cukor, that\u2019s not really what I\u2019m most worried about\u2026<\/p>\n

MR CUKOR: Why? What is it?<\/p>\n

MR PASTERNAK (worried):<\/em> The atmosphere is awful. The lack of personal freedom. That\u2019s unbearable. You can\u2019t say anything they dislike. You say the truth and next moment the police comes and gets you. Am I right?<\/p>\n

MR CUKOR: Yes, you are, unfortunately. \u2013 Well, we\u2019ve arrived. The tram terminates here. (Stands up.<\/em>) Let\u2019s get off.<\/p>\n

CONDUCTOR (shouts): <\/em>Endstation! Prater! Alles steigt aus!<\/p>\n

MR PASTERNAK (stands up):<\/em> Mr Cukor, do you happen to know where G\u00fcnther Strasse is in Vienna?  <\/p>\n
