Hungarian families are familiar with this paper folding game that illustrates the metamorphosis of a paprika. But this clever game is just a drop in the ocean of creative applications of paprika in educational tools. Paprika in Education
The PaprikaMolnár Mill & Museum offers a large variety of educational lessons that are still popular today. By placing education into a museum environment we bring knowledge in a different, more playful way. And yes, as much as tulips can be paprika, you can make an exciting lesson about paprika!
As in these days the schools a starting, with this post we are primarily addressing teachers and parents. But hopefully, every other reader will also gain some inspiration and share some of this with their friends! 😉
At the Paprika Museum we have developed a special education kit based on some interesting insights:
… The discovery of VitaminC by Nobel Prize winner Szent-Györgyi all started with the moment he was teasing his wife with a paprika sandwich.
… Latin American Indians used the spicy smoke of chili to discipline children.
… At the beginning of their “career” paprika plants were kept as decoration in flower pots, not in the fields.
We believe we are in a special situation because our museum is also able to offer some real and exciting experience by visiting the real-life mill next door – where paprika is being processed to spice.
Our special education kit
For smaller kids we are telling the story of Paprika Jancsi (Little Johnny the Paprika) along which they will learn about the paprika background and history. Older kids are often happy to write small essays about some special historical insights – such as how paprika was used as a medicine, or how it traveled to Hungary all the way from the New World, or what kind of meals people used to make with paprika. We can even try one or two recipes!
Scholars of all ages can learn about the many historical topics such as the monastery gardens, the Bulgarian gardeners or the work of Nobel-Prize winning Albert Szent-Györgyi on the importance of vitamin C. A lesson in nature or biology can be made unforgettable through our workshop on plant development. Involving a group of children in seedling, planting or picking can be a real interactive experience. In addition, kids can make their own Kalocsa embroidery and in meantime learn about what role paprika plays in the Hungarian identity.
